The 107-Year-Old Light Bulb

This is a fascinating article about a light bulb that's been burning almost continuously for over a century.

Leave it to me to find a couple sad things in this otherwise upbeat article:

  • The light bulb has been lauded as an "enduring symbol of American reliability and ingenuity." If that's true, why do all of our light bulbs burn out and fail after approximately 1,000 hours of use. This one's been burning a million hours. Sounds more like an "enduring symbol of American reliability and ingenuity a century ago."

  • The light bulb has outlived, by a considerable margin, the company that manufactured it. It was produced by the Shelby Electric Co. of Shelby, OH The company closed its doors 13 years after the light bulb was first screwed into it's socket. Seems unfair that the company responsible for this bit of amazing technology disappeared into anonymity, doesn't it?
